New harbour festival launched for Plymouth.

Sutton Harbour Festival PlymouthThe Sutton Harbour Group will be the main sponsor of a brand new festival being planned for Plymouth which gets underway this summer.

The Sutton Harbour Festival will encompass the Sutton Harbour Plymouth Classic Boat Rally, the Port of Plymouth Regatta and a new shore side event which is likely to include stalls, food and entertainment.

The combined programme of events will run during July and August and will be included in the overall Plymouth Summer Festival calendar, which is officially launched next week. It is expected to attract thousands of people from across the South West and beyond.

The Port of Plymouth Regatta, sponsored by Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, will be held between Saturday 26 July and Sunday 3 August. The Sutton Harbour Plymouth Classic Boat Rally will run between Friday 1 August and Tuesday 5 August and the shore side event will take place over the same weekend.

Nigel Godefroy, chief executive of the Sutton Harbour Group, said: "We are delighted to be supporting this exciting new festival celebrating all that Sutton Harbour has to offer the city of Plymouth. We are building on the success of separate events that have traditionally been held in the city and are confident that this new approach will ensure they will continue to flourish."

Peter Noakes, honorary secretary of the Port of Plymouth Regatta said: “Plymouth is renowned for its maritime links so it makes sense to bring all these events together under one umbrella and create a harbourside festival that everyone can enjoy. We hope to make this year’s regatta the best it has ever been.”

Andy Demaine, organiser of the Sutton Harbour Plymouth Classic Boat Rally which attracts boats from all over Europe, said: “This will be the third year running that we have based the Classic Boat Rally at Sutton Harbour and bringing it into the heart of the city has been a huge success. Linking it to the regatta and other events on shore means there will be a packed programme of events both on and off the water.”

The Sutton Harbour Festival will build on Sutton Harbour’s growing reputation as the key focal point for waterside events.

In May the harbour will host the Race Village in the build up to the Artemis Transat at Sutton Harbour Plymouth, the 2,800-mile single-handed race across the North Atlantic to Boston, USA.

The Sutton Harbour Group has transformed the waterfront at Sutton Harbour in Plymouth with a string of award-winning developments. The company also owns and operates low fare regional airline Air Southwest and Plymouth City Airport.
