Local Area

overview

Located some three and a half hours from London, Plymouth lies between the mouths of the river Plym to the east and Tamar to the West where they flow into the natural harbour of Plymouth Sound. Plymouth Sound is protected by the Breakwater and within it can be found Drake's Island.

Protected by the Breakwater and the Sutton Harbour Lock Gates you'll discover the three marinas that make up Sutton Harbour – Sutton Harbour Marina, Guys Quay Marina and West Pier Marina. Found at the heart of historic Plymouth, just a stone's throw from thriving cafes, restaurants and bars, and a short stroll from Plymouth Hoe and the city centre.

The city centre, a mere five minute walk from the marinas, has undergone much redevelopment of late and is home to Drake Circus Shopping Centre, The Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavillions.

Sutton Harbour Marina is easily accessible from the A38 Dual Carriageway or Plymouth Railway and Bus Stations. Please visit our how to get here page for further details.

Sailing Destinations

overview

Plymouth enjoys one of the finest deep water harbours in the country and is host to many internationally renowned yachting events. The recent hosting of The America's Cup has thrown a spotlight on Plymouth as a maritime destination, showing just how stunning a location it is.

Come and discover Sutton Harbour and escape to some of the best cruising waters in the UK.

From Sutton Harbour, Guys Quay and West Pier Marinas there is easy access to Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth in Devon, or head west to Fowey and Falmouth in Cornwall. For those venturing further afield on longer cruises, the Channel Islands, Isles of Scilly and French coast are all within striking distance.

Some suggested sailing destinations are detailed below. These are intended as a helpful description and do not relieve masters and skippers of vessels of their obligation to conduct their own safe pilotage plans.
