Increasing numbers of boat owners from across the country are choosing to berth in the heart of Britain’s Ocean City thanks to the quality of marina facilities in Plymouth.
Berth holders at Sutton Harbour Marina, situated alongside Plymouth’s historic Barbican, have praised the unique location, with a recent survey showing that 100 per cent would recommend the marina, and marina bosses report that increasing numbers of boat owners are opting to berth in Plymouth, even if they live more than 200 miles away.
Rob and Erin Gill regularly journey from their home in Harpenden to spend time on their boat ‘Saskia’, now berthed in Sutton Harbour, but feel the four-hour drive is more than worthwhile.
Erin said: “Plymouth offers access to some great sailing areas which are less busy than other locations around the UK. It’s also an ideal base to sail to France, Spain and Ireland. The people in Plymouth are very friendly and we get on well with other boat owners. The facilities are very good, it’s safe, easy to berth and staff are professional. Away from the water, Sutton Harbour and the Barbican offer a great choice of restaurants, walking and cycling.”
Mark and Jane Chapman also face a long drive from their South East home to Plymouth – but say they wouldn’t want to berth anywhere else after berthing in Sutton Harbour Marina for the last five years.
“The marina is so secure, particularly when there are bad sea conditions, and the lock gate is so good that you never experience the bad weather, which is a large part of the appeal for us as we keep our boat in the water all year round,” Mark said.
Sutton Harbour Marina currently has a limited number of spaces available for winter berths – and is urging anyone looking for a safe berth this winter to sign up now and take advantage of its package of payment options.
A special payment package for anyone looking for secure pontoon berthing over the winter period from November 1st, 2014 – March 31st, 2015 enables boats to be safely berthed in the heart of the city for less than it would cost to keep a car in a city centre car park.
Winter berths at Sutton Harbour start from £108 per metre which is just over £5 per metre per week.
Mark Brimacombe, Sutton Harbour Marina and King Point Marina Manager said: “Our berth holders come from all over the country to take advantage of berthing in Plymouth as the city is now nationally recognised as Britain’s ‘Ocean City’ with so much to offer.
“We have a limited number of winter berths available, along with a number of annual berthing offers for next year with discounts for early payment for the 2015/2016 season when paid in advance, as well as options to pay in instalments every month to spread the cost.
“We also offer berths at our newer King Point Marina, now a year old, with equally fantastic access to some of the best cruising waters to be found in the UK.”
Sutton Harbour boasts an especially secure environment, with three separate areas offering 24 hour secure access including 24 hour CCTV, and flexible berths for motor or sailing vessels up to 25 metres.
